Swim Meet Order of Events: How a Meet Day Flows

Updated July 2026 · about a 5 minute read

Every swim meet publishes an "order of events," the numbered sequence that the whole day runs in. Learn to read it and you can plan your arrival, your snacks, and exactly when to be poolside.

What the order of events is

It is the list of every event in the order it will be swum, each with a number. Event 1 goes first, then Event 2, and so on. The heat sheet follows this same order, so the two go hand in hand. (See how to read a heat sheet.)

How events are usually ordered

The exact pattern varies by meet and region, so always go by the actual order of events for that meet.

Sessions

Bigger meets split into sessions (like Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon), each with its own numbered order and its own warm-up. Make sure you are reading the order for the right session.

Using it to plan your day

Heat Guardian shows your swimmers' events in order and estimates when each one is coming up, so you can relax between races instead of watching the board nonstop. First meet? Start with what to expect.

Skip the decoding on deck

Heat Guardian reads a meet's heat sheet and shows each of your swimmers' events, heats, lanes, seed times, and the next cut to chase, all on one page. Free, private, no ads.

Frequently asked questions

What order do swim meet events go in?
Events run in numbered order through each session. Many meets alternate girls and boys events, and often run shorter or younger events before longer or older ones, but the meet's order of events is the source of truth.
How do I know when my child's event is?
Find their event number in the order of events, then track the current event as it counts up. When it is a few events away, get to the pool.
Are girls or boys events first?
It varies by meet. Many alternate (odd-numbered events for one, even for the other), so girls and boys events are interleaved rather than one whole block first.
