Swim Meet Order of Events: How a Meet Day Flows
Every swim meet publishes an "order of events," the numbered sequence that the whole day runs in. Learn to read it and you can plan your arrival, your snacks, and exactly when to be poolside.
What the order of events is
It is the list of every event in the order it will be swum, each with a number. Event 1 goes first, then Event 2, and so on. The heat sheet follows this same order, so the two go hand in hand. (See how to read a heat sheet.)
How events are usually ordered
- Alternating girls and boys. Many meets interleave them (odd events one gender, even the other), so they are mixed through the day rather than in separate blocks.
- By stroke and distance. Meets often group similar events and frequently run shorter or younger events earlier.
- Relays commonly open or close a session.
The exact pattern varies by meet and region, so always go by the actual order of events for that meet.
Sessions
Bigger meets split into sessions (like Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon), each with its own numbered order and its own warm-up. Make sure you are reading the order for the right session.
Using it to plan your day
- Find each of your swimmer's event numbers.
- Estimate timing: events move fairly steadily, so a rough count tells you when to be ready.
- Arrive in time for your team's warm-up, which comes before Event 1.
