What to Bring to a Swim Meet: The Parent Survival Kit

Updated July 2026 · about a 6 minute read

Swim meets are long, chilly in the early sessions, hot on the deck later, and full of downtime between races. A little packing goes a long way. Here is the survival kit that keeps a swim family comfortable from warm-ups to the final heat.

For the swimmer

Staying warm and dry

Swimmers sit around wet for hours, so warmth matters more than almost anything else.

Food and hydration

Racing on an empty tank is rough, and greasy snack-bar food sits heavy. Pack easy, familiar fuel.

Beating the boredom

There is a lot of waiting between events, and bored kids get cold and cranky.

For the parents

The Sharpie trick (and a simpler way)

The classic move is writing each event, heat, and lane on your swimmer's arm in permanent marker, so they always know where to be. It works, and it is a rite of passage. But it smears, it only fits a few events, and you recopy it every session.

The simpler way: Heat Guardian reads the meet's heat sheet and keeps every one of your swimmers' events, heats, lanes, and seed times on your phone, so you can skip the Sharpie (or just keep it for the fun of it). New to the lingo on that sheet? See our swim meet terminology guide.

Skip the decoding on deck

Heat Guardian reads a meet's heat sheet and shows each of your swimmers' events, heats, lanes, seed times, and the next cut to chase, all on one page. Free, private, no ads.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a swim meet last?
Most sessions run 2 to 5 hours, and big meets have multiple sessions across a day or weekend. Expect a lot of waiting between your swimmer's races, so pack food, warm layers, and something to do.
What should my swimmer eat during a meet?
Small, familiar, easy-to-digest snacks: bagels, bananas, granola bars, pretzels, pasta. Keep water handy and go easy on heavy or greasy food right before a race.
Do I really need to bring a chair?
For most meets, yes. Bleacher space fills up fast and you will be there for hours. A folding chair and a warm layer make a big difference.
